  2. Online test

I’d like to be able to test my students digitally. It would be great if the words could be read out and put into a sentence so the students can hear it through their headphones. I could ***** the whole class on their lists in 10 minutes rather than assessing 4 groups individually (which takes 40 minutes). It would be great if the assessment tool turned off the autocorrect feature. I would need to be able to add my own list words (many words aren’t available on spellodrome) and is like to be able to record my voice if needed.

  4. Spelling rules or lists

Is it important to give a list of words to learn or should we just teach spelling rules and give children an unseen list of words to test if they have learned the rule?

  9. Wordbuilding games/activities

Games where children can build words from a range of root words with additional prefixes and suffixes to explore morphology would be useful.

Building real words from a clue - e.g. Build the word to fit the gap in the sentence:

The magician's assistant __________ in the cabinet.

    re appear ed
    dis ing
    un ly

Also, children could create nonsense words with a root word and a range of prefixes and suffixes which they then have to define. (Although I'm not sure how you would check whether their definition was appropriate for their word!)

...and any other variation on this…

  10. High frequency words

How do you treat high frequency and exception words in your classroom? Do you do a few words each week? Or do you dedicate a whole list to these words from time to time?

  12. Mastery

Students should need to achieve mastery at lower levels before moving to higher levels. High achievers should be encouraged and able to go on at their own pace. This is a strength in Mathletics. Mastery has been rated by Hattie as a highly effective teaching strategy.

  13. Phonemic awareness

Have interactive games that first identify a learners phonemic awareness, then fun games or activities that target the learners gaps/needs in phonemic awareness (i.e. first and last sounds identification and manipulation, certain sounds and spellings of these sounds) as well as accelerating their learning in P.A. to push their learning to age appropriate understanding. This should be able to be played from Y0 all the way to Y13, as I have several high school learners who are struggling in English because they are lacking these skills.

  14. syllabification

    Teach the rules of syllabification
Vowels say their name (long vowel sound) or sound (short vowel sound)
Every consonant has one sounded vowel
    Vowel + consonant = sound
    Consonant + vowel + consonant = sound
    Consonant + vowel = name
Vowel on its own = name
Once they have these basic rules mastered look at other rules eg vowel digraphs and split digraphs et

  15. Spelling should focus on the four areas: phonics, visual, morphemic and etymological

A usable spelling program would be based on the four components of spelling instruction and directly align with the curriculum

  17. Spellchecker

Could you include a built in spellchecker- a child friendly version - that has a bank of alternative graphemes for each phoneme? It could maybe help children or scaffold their attempts to encourage them to get it right? I’m thinking maybe something along the lines of positive spelling .They could maybe tell the computer the word they are trying to spell through a microphone, the computer could then encourage them to have a go. It could tick the letters that are correct and give them a bank of alternative graphemes for the phonemes spelt incorrectly.

  19. An adult version of the spelling program

I teach adult numeracy and literacy (Both Indigenous and ESL). They really like Spellodrome (and in the past Reading Eggs), but it would be great if there were versions of these games that were for Adults. There are literally thousands of young adults and older adults who would benefit from these type of websites, but some of them don't want to use sites targeted at children.
